We practice baptism after a person publicly declares their faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. The sacrament of baptism represents the washing away of sins. John 3:5 describes the disciples' own baptism, and this represents that event. Bible verses like Romans 6:4 (where it is said that Christians are "buried with him through baptism into death so that just as Christ rose from the dead in the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life") are also the inspiration for this practice.
